Playlunch is an Australian seven-piece from Melbourne, formed in 2022 during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Born from the imagination of its singer and guitarist Liam Bell, the project began in a studio set up in a shared house, before bringing together several musicians from the local scene, some of whom had previously played together in the folk band Parkville.
The collective lays claim to a style it humorously describes as “bogan funk”: an explosive blend of funk, groove and offbeat energy, deeply rooted in Australian pop culture. Their lyrics—funny, sharp and nostalgic—celebrate the small details of everyday life with a healthy dose of self-mockery, packed with references to icons of Australian life.
On stage, Playlunch delivers infectious energy thanks to a rich line-up combining guitars, bass, drums, keys, trumpet and saxophone. Between driving rhythms, blazing horns and a party spirit, the band puts on shows that are as danceable as they are irresistibly joyful.
In 2024, Playlunch took a new step by signing with the ABC Music label, confirming its rise among the most original and promising acts on Australia’s new music scene.
