Yoka Mbonda is a new creation by Congolese multi-instrumentalist Tister Ikomo. The spellbinding energy released by this new performance through folk songs, percussion, and magnetic rhythms from the Congo is a tribute to the fervor and grandeur of the majestic Congo River.
With his new creation, Tister Ikomo—who is also a dancer, choreographer, and director—takes us on an imaginary journey where the languages, syncopated cadences, and lively dances of the peoples living along the vast Congo River meet. Ikomo has worked with internationally renowned directors, notably collaborating with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui in Vlaemsch (Chez moi) and Mea Culpa, and participating in Alain Platel and Fabrizio Cassol’s production Coup Fatal, which led him on an international tour.
Yoka Mbonda is a performance to be savored with the entire body, a feat that Tister Ikomo, accompanied by five brilliant percussionists, achieves with breathtaking skill.
